Building a Business and Juggling a Dream

Starting a business is challenging enough on its own, but doing it while life is in full swing takes it to another level. Between two dogs, two cats, and a fixer-upper house, it sometimes feels like I’m juggling a thousand things at once. Add in the anticipation of big life changes ahead (like becoming a parent), and I’m learning just how much life can ask of us when we decide to chase a dream.

A Balancing Act

Starting a business feels a lot like spinning plates. Every day brings a new priority: designing a product, troubleshooting a process, cleaning up after the dogs, or fixing a loose board in the house. There’s no perfect system—it’s messy, it’s chaotic, and it requires constant adjustment. But in that mess, there’s momentum. Each task, no matter how small, is another step forward, whether it’s toward a finished product, a cozier home, or just a moment of peace.

Lessons from the Chaos

While I’m still figuring things out, here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • Progress Isn’t Always Linear: Some days feel productive; others feel like running in circles. The trick is to keep moving, even if it’s just a little.

  • Anchors: Whether it’s walking the dogs, fixing something in the house, or tweaking a design, each small accomplishment builds confidence.

  • Learning to Let Go: Not every plan pans out, and not every day goes as expected. Adapting and refocusing are just as important as planning.

Embracing the Journey

Life right now is a mix of building, fixing, and dreaming. The business is taking shape, the house is slowly turning into a home, and I’m learning to embrace the juggling act. Each challenge, whether it’s designing a saw or patching a wall, teaches me something new about myself and the process of creating something meaningful.

For anyone else chasing a dream while juggling life’s demands: you’re not alone. The chaos doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong—it’s proof that you’re moving forward. Keep going, keep dreaming, and trust that each step, no matter how small, is part of the journey.

My father helping me with drywall at my home. He is one of the greatest inspirational figures in my life. The stick sitting in the window was found in a pile of lawn equipment in their garage. It is a walking stick that we made during an afternoon walking in the woods when I was very young. A smaller walking stick for me is sitting beside it in the window behind where I’m standing in this picture.
